The Pastels - Truck, Train, Tractor.
I was an innocent youngster and for years assumed that "Pastel" was Stephen McCookerybook or whatever he's called actual real name. Well er, no. My Pastels rock and roll anecdote was in Brighton when they were on tour "promoting" Sittin' Pretty in early 1989. I was a wide eyed promoter for several years inflicting this filth on the kids for £3.50 (£3 for the unwaged) every Sunday night at the "Escape Club". This particular week and I can't remember why or how but Bobby Gillespie was sharing DJ duties with me. (I was "driving" the decks.). Shockingly the first record he wanted me to play wasn't The Byrds, Lovin' Spoonful or even Love. Oh no. It was "Sweet Child of Mine" by Guns N' Roses. He played it again too at the end of their set. I crouched down in the "booth" for 10 minutes hoping people didn't think I'd put it on. He had probably taken some speed or something. The one time he chose discs to play on my radio show (another forum for my shameful tastes...nobody could stop me) it wasn't Lee Hazlewood, 70s Beach Boys or MC5. Oh No. " The Boys are back in town" by Thin Lizzy. Always very polite bloke though.
of course in hindsight we realise that actually 'sweet child o'mine' is a wonderful song, although admitedly it probably took Luna's magical cover version to convince us. And now that Belle & Sebastian have steeped out of the closet, as it were, it's cool to admit you always liked Thin Lizzy too.
