Mary Lou Lord - Some Jingle Jangle Morning
2004. Married.3 kids. Mortgage. Hamster (Harry #2. First one died but boys haven't yet noticed that we replaced him). At the sort of gig/venue where they serve you tuna nicoise at your table and they don't sell crisps but will do you a selection of olives. And all the time bands strum away inoffensively and get polite claps and some middle class banter. I never get there early enough to grab a table anyway so I'm downing lager in plastic glasses in the dark at the back. 4th on the bill is a (late) thirtysomething singer songwriter, a vaguely familiar country singer or for the readers of Uncut; an Americana singer. She looks a bit and speaks a bit like Suzi Quatro. That’s now on Radio TWO, not bestride a motorbike wearing leather trousers on Top of the Pops in 1974. Then hang on a minute I know this one. And bloody hell its "Some Jingle Jangle Morning", a 7" classic back in the day (A Kill Rock Stars Records , Olympia, Bikini Kill, hair slides, early 90s type day) but now with added twang. Why on earth is this woman covering this (un)pop(ular) classic from 12 years ago. ? Except that then it dawned on me. Oh. Sufjan Stevens was next on the bill. Crazy soft spoken young man. The passing of time really hurts some times.
